Dartmouth Partners European Union (Remote)
Senior / Staff Data Engineers – Databricks Migration (x5)
Location: EU?based, remote?first
Day Rate Range: 450-750 EUR
Client: PE Backed Technology Business
Our client is a private equity?backed European technology group undergoing a major transformation of its data estate. Following a period of organisational change, the business has now committed to a clear, funded roadmap to exit all legacy data warehouses and establish Databricks as its single, unified data platform by the end of this year.
Databricks is now the de facto platform, with Unity Catalog at the core of governance, semantics and future AI enablement. There is a strong mandate to move decisively away from SQL Server and Oracle, with no intention of maintaining parallel legacy environments.
As a result, the business is building a dedicated migration team of five data engineers across varying levels of seniority to execute this transition at pace. This role exists to deliver hands?on migration and translation work and will have a direct impact on how data is consumed, governed and scaled across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Migrate complex data pipelines and workloads from SQL Server and Oracle into Databricks, following modern lakehouse patterns.
- Translate existing relational data models into Databricks?native implementations, including Unity Catalog–managed tables and analytics?ready structures.
- Re?engineer legacy SQL and PL/SQL logic into scalable, maintainable data engineering code (e.g. Databricks SQL, PySpark, dbt where appropriate).
- Work closely with the internal data platform team to ensure full knowledge transfer and transparency throughout delivery.
- Contribute to a centralised, unified data platform, consolidating multiple legacy warehouses into a single source of truth.
- Make pragmatic engineering decisions that minimise technical debt while supporting future AI and advanced analytics use cases.
Contractor Profile
- Proven experience as a Senior, Staff or Lead Data Engineer on large?scale data platform or migration programmes.
- Deep understanding of the traditional SQL / RDBMS world, including SQL Server, Oracle and complex transformation logic.
- Hands?on experience delivering production workloads on Databricks, including Databricks SQL, PySpark and Delta Lake.
- Familiarity with Unity Catalog and modern data governance concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to translate legacy SQL?centric implementations into modern data platform code, rather than lifting and shifting existing patterns.
- Comfortable operating in a fast?paced environment with high autonomy and limited architectural hand?holding.
- EU?based, with availability to work remotely and attend occasional in?person sessions (Florence advantageous but not required).
Please note: This opportunity is not suitable for junior or mid?level engineers, nor for purely advisory or architecture?only profiles. The programme requires experienced engineers who can execute at pace.
