In today's competitive business world, employee health and well-being have become essential for creating a thriving, productive workplace. The link between wellness and performance is not hard to understand: happier, healthier employees tend to be more engaged, focused, and productive.
Yet, many businesses overlook the power of simple, cost-effective wellness initiatives that can dramatically improve their team’s well-being and, ultimately, their bottom line.
At Dartmouth Partners, we not only focus on placing the right talent within businesses but also take the time to support both employers and employees with initiatives that create a balanced work culture.
As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, it's a great time for businesses to focus on how they can prioritise wellness, with emphasis on supporting mental health in the workplace.
Whether you’re looking to enhance employee satisfaction or improve workplace productivity, here are some easy-to-implement wellness programs that can have a big impact on your team’s health and happiness.
1. Encourage daily movement and physical activity
Sitting for long hours at a desk can lead to poor physical health and reduced productivity. A simple solution is encouraging employees to incorporate regular movement into their workday.
"Walking meetings" are one way to break up sedentary workdays and inspire creativity and energy between employees.
This month, Dartmouth introduced a 30-minute at-desk workout to get our team moving. The quick break left people feeling refreshed and energised, and the laughter during the session definitely boosted the office's overall mood!
Additionally, consider offering discounted gym memberships, sponsoring fitness challenges, or even introducing stretch breaks during long meetings. These don’t just boost physical well-being but also help employees engage over shared activities, creating a more connected and positive workplace culture.
2. Promote healthy eating choices
Good nutrition fuels both the body and the mind. Offering healthy food options in the workplace, such as fresh fruit, nuts, and low/no sugar drinks will contribute to employees' energy levels and concentration throughout the day. Making information on healthy eating readily available can encourage better habits and contribute to overall wellness.
A more involved initiative is to consider running a nutrition workshop, providing suggestions for healthy meal plans, or partnering with local lunch spots around the office to offer discounts.
3. Prioritise mental health and stress management
Mental well-being is a cornerstone of workplace wellness. Supporting your employees' mental health can reduce burnout, lower absenteeism, and will create a more positive work environment. There are many services employers can offer their teams access or signpost to, such as counselling services (online, on the phone and in person), meditation apps, or mindfulness workshops. A simple but powerful in-office tool is to create designated quiet spaces for employees, where phone calls and team meetings are not permitted.
Some employers have introduced a “Wellness Reimbursement” to prioritise mental health where employees receive a stipend to spend on health and wellness activities like yoga classes and meditation.
Mental health days and flexible working hours are also effective ways to ensure employees have the time and space they need to recharge. By prioritising mental health, employers create a culture of care, where employees feel valued and supported both professionally and personally.
4. Support work-life balance
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is also the responsibility of employers, not just on the employee. Companies can promote this by encouraging employees to take their full annual leave and making sure workloads are SMART, with emphasis on the ‘achievable’. Implementing policies that discourage after-hours emails and making it expected that employees disconnect during their weekends and holidays is another way to demonstrate that the company values their personal time.
Workplace wellness doesn’t have to involve complex, costly programs. With small, simple initiatives such as these starter ideas you can make a big difference to your employees’ well-being.
At Dartmouth Partners, we understand that a healthy work-life balance is a critical factor in employee retention and overall happiness. We work closely with employers to ensure they provide roles that allow candidates to thrive both professionally and personally. And we make sure to prioritise this for our own teams too.
